More people want to grow hemp in Wisconsin.
The state agriculture department received almost 2,100 applications for hemp permits from businesses and individuals.
Spokeswoman Donna Gilson says that’s about six times as many as last year, when the state held its first hemp growing season in decades. She believes the move by Congress to remove hemp from the list of controlled substances was a factor.
Last Friday was the deadline to apply. Gilson expects more applications will come in through the mail earlier this week.
Most hemp growers are producing it for CBD oil or grain.
