Prosecutors say an envelope ties a Lakewood man to the cold case murders of a Green Bay couple.
They’re charging 82-year-old Raymand Vannieuwenhoven with two counts of first-degree murder, and one count of sexual assault. He’s accused of killing 25-year-old David Schuldes and 24-year-old Ellen Matheys in 1976, while the two were camping at McClintock Park in Marinette County.
Prosecutors say a genealogist for the Paragon company narrowed DNA evidence to four sons and four grandsons in the Vannieuwenhoven family. They say detectives tested socks, a bandage, and an inhaler from a garbage bag from one of the sons. When the DNA didn’t match, they say a detective had coffee with another son, and took the cup for testing.
Then they reportedly moved onto Raymand. Prosecutors say a deputy asked him to take a survey, and seal the envelope. They say Raymand’s DNA matched the suspect.
