The proposal from Governor Evers to raise the state’s gas tax would let it continue to climb in future years.
The governor is including an eight-cent hike in the gas tax in his budget to help pay for transportation projects. He also wants to change it every year moving forward based on the consumer price index.
The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau estimates the tax would climb by 0.8 cents a gallon in April of next year and again in April of 2021. That’s a 9.6 cent increase during the two-year budget. The bureau estimates that would generate more than $525 million over that time for transportation.
Evers wants to eliminate the minimum markup law for gas. He believes that would lower the cost of gas by 14 cents a gallon.
