The cost to turn a railroad trestle in the Appleton flats into a trail will be cheaper than expected.
The low bid for the Lawe Street trestle project, from Janke General Contractors, came in at just over $1.3 million. Parks and Recreation Director Dean Gazza says the city budgeted $1.8 million for the work.
He hopes crews can get started on the project this winter, and open the trestle by the end of August.
Two grants will also lower the costs for property taxpayers. A DNR Stewardship Fund grant will cover up to half of the final bill. Outagamie County is providing $200,000.
