Coverage of the stabbing and shooting at Oshkosh West High School last week is leading to a debate over using the suspect’s name in news stories.
Winnebago County Sheriff John Matz is asking local media outlets not to release the boy’s name. He thinks it could lead to more school violence in the area.
Bill Lueders of the Freedom of Information Council believes there are benefits to identifying suspects. He says someone might know the suspect, and reach out to investigators with more information.
WHBY News will include the name of the student accused of stabbing a school police officer at Oshkosh West, once the teen is formally charged with a crime.
