The fight over a proposed sales tax in Outagamie County was one of the top local stories in 2019.
The county board agreed in June to become the latest in the state to put a half-cent tax in place, over the objections of County Executive Tom Nelson.
Board Chair Jeff Nooyen says it’s projected to bring in about $20 million dollars a year, and $5 million would come from visitors. He says those visitors are using local services while they’re in the area, and now they’ll be contributing.
Nelson vetoed the sales tax, but the county board voted to override him. The tax takes effect next Wednesday.
