The state’s top education official delivered his annual State of Education address at the Capitol yesterday.
Superintendent of Schools Tony Evers says education funding hasn’t been a priority. He says a decade ago Wisconsin spent 40% of its general taxes on education, and now it is down to 32%.
Evers says lawmakers are leaving money on the table by not taking federal dollars to expand Medicaid.
He says school funding, student health, and transportation are key issues that need to be dealt with.
Evers is running for governor in 2018 as a Democrat.
