Sturgeon spearing kicks off Saturday, February 9 and the excitement goes beyond what’s caught on Lake Winnebago.
We spoke with Craig Molitor with Visit Fond du Lac about the Sturgeon Spectacular this weekend. They call it “A Celebration of Winter and Really Big Fish!”
The owner of Stockbridge Harbor Bar is also looking forward to the weekend. They’re planning for big crowds of spearers and spectators. This year Kim Halbach contracted a one-of-a-kind art piece. It’s 6 feet tall and is made using Japanese brush stroke.
As far as what’s happening under the ice, DNR sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs says clarity was averaging 9.5 feet of visibility. The northern half of the lake was clear, 12-13 feet and south end of the lake was dirtier, around 7-9 feet.
