The City of Appleton is exploring options to help bicyclists, when they’re on busier side streets.
Traffic Engineer Eric Lom says those roads have up to 3,000 cars a day. He describes them as busier than a typical residential street, but not to the level of Drew or Mason streets.
Lom calls them “kind of a tweener” and it’s a challenge to find ways to improve safety and how bicyclists perceive it, without having to put in bike lanes.
City leaders might look at possibilities that would get drivers to slow down on those streets. They could include pedestrian bump-outs at intersections, and raised crosswalks.
