Oxford Languages defines essential as “absolutely necessary; extremely important”. That’s the same word that we as a country used to describe a number of different occupations during the recent pandemic. When the chips were down, tens of thousands of Americans not only took on one of the biggest challenges in American history, but did so without even flinching.
We’ve moved on from the pandemic now for over a year (for better or for worse), and it seems as though we have forgotten just how much some of these people went to bat for us when we needed it most.
Pat Raes is the President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which represents over 7,000 people across the state of Wisconsin. On Tuesday, the union held a press conference outside of the Thedacare Regional Medical Center in Appleton where she and several service employees shed some light on a number of issues they have faced since Covid.
“Thedacare workers are amongst the lowest payed workers we represent at this point” she explained before going on to say that the average employee is making $14.22.
She went on to explain the hopes and desires of the employees that she represents, and gives a little bit of a peek behind the curtain into negotiations.
An offer has been extended to Thedacare for comment; however as of writing I have not heard back.
