Redrawing maps will always be a partisan issue. It doesn’t matter what person or group is in charge of the process. Inevitably, the biases of the map drawers will leak into the final product.
The end-goal for any level headed individual should be to achieve the most fair outcome, given these inherent short-comings in the process.
Depending on who you ask in Wisconsin, the maps haven’t been fair or representative in a very long time. That has the potential to change soon though, seeing as there is currently a challenge to these maps headed to the newly minted “left-leaning” Wisconsin Supreme Court.
In an effort to nip that challenge in the bud, the Republican Legislature has proposed a new redistricting process.
A process that is similar to the methods used in Iowa has now been proposed here in Wisconsin.
A process that was suggested by the Democratic legislature just 3 short years ago.
A process that will need to be voted on by tomorrow, 9/13, without looking over many of the specifics or details.
State Senator Kelda Roys joined my program earlier today to break down some of the red flags that State Democrats are highlighting in the legislation, and what a potential path forward would look like.
