It was a heck of a run for Iowa’s Caitlin Clark. She and her Hawkeye teammates took an amazing shot at the NCAA title these past weeks and months. They came up short…or did they, really?
Sure, South Carolina was just flat-out better on Championship Sunday and beat the ladies from Iowa City 87-75. Superior front court play with an exceptional effort from their bench gave the Gamecocks an edge that Iowa could not overcome. Congrats to Dawn Staley and her undefeated team, and we all know how hard it is to run the table in any sport.
In my eyes, the winners were more than just the gals from Columbia. All of college women’s basketball was victorious with the amazing play of its teams to the unprecedented attention to its stars like Clark, UConn’s Paige Bueckers, USC’s Ju Ju Watkins and many others. Ratings for the women’s games have been record-setting, with many claiming the ladies were more fun to watch than the guys!
Having been blessed with a daughter that worked hard and excelled at Division 1 basketball, it makes you proud to see the groundwork set in place in recent decades is now flourishing with today’s game.
