Dave Edwards and It’s Just my Take, 4-26-24
We noted Earth Day this past Monday and continue observing it through this Earth Week, but are we really paying attention?
With an assist from www.earthday.org, the theme of this year’s effort is to remove plastics from everyday use. Take a look:
Global plastics has reached an estimated 460 million metric tons in recent years.
It is estimated that 75 to 199 million tons of plastic are currently in our oceans
One million plastic bottles are purchased every minute worldwide, while up to five trillion plastic bags are used a year
An estimated 9.7 billion cigarette butts are littered in the U.S. every year, 4 billion of these in waterways. They comprise nearly 20% of all litter.
These are just a few of the eye-opening stats we could share. I know the Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance is fully volunteer-staffed for their big cleanup project next weekend. Don’t wait to assist with other efforts when you can, and let’s do our best to keep plastic usage to a minimum where possible.
